Hey guys.. my car was actually going pretty slugish the other day.. couldnt figure it out i know my clutch is screwed but its not even slipping these days at peak power..
anywayz.. i decided to turn down the boost to about 10psi and the car seemed to perform just as well, it might be a batch of bad synergy fuel.. not sure.. but i noticed when i put it up again to 14psi i could hear the car ping on one occasion.. outdoor temps werent that high and yes i just have a cone style air filter exposed in the bay so intake temps are def associated.. just wondering what can be done in this situation.. i've tried placing a custom made sock over the air filter and having some 3inch piping from the front of the car plugged in.. this seemed to rob me of more hp.. so then i tried just a simple heat shield and yup.. same outcome car still felt a lil restricted.. looks like havin the pod open atm is the best bet... so how do i reduce ping without restricting my intake? i suppose the car was performing badly on high psi due to pinging and activating the knock sensor to retard timing? how can i check this???
farken.. turbos suck |

I really cant say much except before you start coming to drastic conclusions tune her up and run optimax fuel its the best high octane on the market then run your 14psi and see how it goes, Alternatively if it keeps happening try some injector fuel additive. if this doesnt help just use precision impact and blow ya thang out the engine bay hehe

lol
yeah man... well its know that if our cars ping it activates knock sensor which will then retard timing and reducing ping... i notice my car can sometimes run really good and then pretty bad on different occasions.. so yeah i suppose this is the reason...
btw i prefer synergy over optimax.... my car seems to like it better |

synergy is the best fuel its said to be ahead of optimax and it seems that people runnin boosted motors agree
mx68u i reckon ur best bet would be leave ur pod in as you feel its workin best and use the 3" piping to direct the cold air into the front part of ur filter with that opening thats about 3" in diameter ull be gettin full cold air straight into ur filter to compensate for the heat soak you could then try some heat shield around the filter but make sure the piping is still attached to fed the cold air in and then see if it's better with or without shield

i've already tried that peakn.. its amazing.. its almost as tho the heat shield restricts airflow too much.. as soon as i pulled it off and went for a spin, turned down the psi at the same time, and it went just as hard... put up the boost again and well it was running much better.. jesus you should of felt how sluggish the car was with the filter cover i fabricated.. that restricted shit loads!

How was the car tuned I mean my car was tune with 13psi stock intake 1st rebuilt gearbox basicly thing have changed but engine has not. Most EFI cars can go from a feel good to a feel bad and it can just be taste of Pinging. my car 3 days ago was feeling abit crap, yesterday felt great bakc to normal. This can be from many things. Our cars Airflow meter carrys a air -temp sensor, which I would say does performe better when feed cold air. Fuel is a big problem in NSW you never know what you are getting. I constantly add octane booster when I fill up from a place I don't know. You also find it takes time for bad fuel to hit the knock snesor. I usually fill up above 1/2 tank but when I do fill up below that it's always the same place. I can tell you there is no difference between any of the 98 fuels Caltex only have a 96 RON fuel infact the BP Mobil and Shell all come form the same trucks that fill from the same boat that comes from south east asia, any difference will be due to some additives. Fuel cutting and so forth is comon. Plus any increase in air temp will effect out put, I mean I only run 9-10psi now becuase I don't hit cut anymore, the stock turbo is so small, I had mine tuend inthe middle of summer so 30degree day and 20 degree day feels very different. I think what happened to your cars was the it saw pinging chandged the timeing, untill you shut it off for enoguh time for it to want new figures/ number /internal reset, when it did it said lets run this, it felt better. I see it alot on many a EFI car I like my mates ET pulsar runs a microtech and you can see when it runs different time because of temp or it pinged and didn't like it he just hits a button and resets it.
Oh yeah higher Octane will just hide pinging if it's there for a reason it's there. A Higher RON just stops pinging from ocurring earlier. To get the Best out of a open air pod you should not box it with restriction you should box or sheild it from heat. Mx68U if you put the battery to boot you can sheild it from the rest of the engine bay, that's the best you can do with out stopping it becoming restricting. Best stuff is Carbon Fibre but Cost / Fibre Glass. I am working on one for a modded air box But heat is a big problem for most cars. But our cars well you own one you know what i mean by heat

My Car chip was written in the middle of june on an overcast day they wrote maps for up to 14psi coz i was running lean afterwards... i reduced the boost shortly after i got the car back because it would actually peak at around 16 psi on cool nights... i think that was just my shitty boost gauge installation tho..
i just re-plumbed in my boost cable into the vacuum line with the green trace (was previously connected to the bov line) and the readings seem more accurate... its enabled me to fine tune the boost so now im running 14psi stable in 4th.. which is perfect car has been running like it just came out of SAS again, feels great must of been my shitty boost gauge line setup
problem is i pulled off my front end to clean out my intercooler on the weekend with petrol and i noticed that the first ic hose had little cuts in it.. not sure if they go all the way through but it could be causing some of the boost inconsistancies i have been noticing every now and then.. also sometimes it takes a while for boost to cut in so im pretty sure its leaking.. need to get some new ones...
hmm would suppose anyone would be interested in mandrel bent ic piping?
