| Soon I hope to have a car of my own, and with a pretty good budget of about 2-3 thou, im not quite sure what to buy. The cordia seems to be a pretty good choice, mainly because my friends cant stop talkin about it. How good are the turbo cordia's?, ive heard they can do 0-100 in 5.5 seconds!! with an engine outputting a meagre 145 hp. is all this true? |

The guy to talk to is Dave (Cordial). He's had his Cordia GSR for ages.
From what ive seen of his ride their definatly not a bad little car. Especially for their current prices. I dont know about those specs, but check out his profile here.

cordia isnt a bad car, just getting a little old.
A couple of issues i have found about them through my friends is that the ecu isnt the best not liking major modifications, another thing is the car that they are throttle body injected, with two injectors as opposed to the now more conventional injection systems where you have directly in each combustion chamber, both these factors are important to consider if you plan on going far with the cordia, you will without a doubt need and aftermarket ecu installed like a microtech.
On the upside they are pretty cheap cars, have 110kw's stock (leaded versions) and are incredibly light (just over 1 ton) which does make them ok performers, stock the do the quarter in the low or flat 16's, add an intercooler and a bit of boost (not sure how much would be safe) and low 15's shouldnt be to hard to achieve.
Again however on the downside they are getting harder and harder to find (in any condition) and the majority have already been modified/thrashed so you will have your work cut out in sourcing a nice exmaple.
If you do decide on the cordia i suggest you go for an early model (leaded) as the have more power, also there are models with a TC05 mitsubishi turbo and TC06, do some research as the TC06 turbo is actually much larger and has heaps more potential, also the same turbo housing as the VL turbo so upgrades are cheap and readily available.

btw 5.5 seconds 0 - 100 is not possible in a stocker unless its got the wastegate bent quite a bit more like flat 9's |

if u want cheap thrills go for the cordia. these things will rip arse with an intercooler and 3inch exhaust off the turbo all the way thru (no cat makes it cheap)and around 13-15psi...back in the late 90's cordia's such as these were humiliating brand new WRX's quite easily..and they will last assuming the motor and turbo is in good shape and you look after ur car. if u r looking to damage ur car. remove ur actuator hose and hold on as u pull 28psi + and watch all those rich kids in there super fast cars in ur rear view mirror... as long as ur runnin with the above mentioned mods u will see anythin up to 3 months before ur motor literally rips apart. A mate's example lasted 3 months in this state and it had about 180,000kms on it with the standard turbo and motor
Actual specifications for the 2 different models are
1983 - 84 AA & 1985 AB Cordia GSR Turbo (leaded model-only settle for this model) motor: 4G62BT Sirius 1.8 litre SOHC turbo: TC06 power: 110kw@ 6000rpm torque: 210Nm @ 4000 rpm
0-100: 7.9secs 1/4 mile 15.8secs
or the unleaded sucker 1986 - 89 AC Cordia GSR Turbo (unleaded with the dreaded cat..this model lugs around an extra 30kg) motor: 4G62BT Sirius 1.8 litre SOHC turbo: TC05 power: 90kw @ 5500 rpm torque 172Nm @ 3000 rpm
0-100: 9.3secs 1/4mile: 16.9
remember these cars aint intercooled and have a pretty shitty exhaust design so cheap power is available
good luck findin a good one though

All that has been said can be
I was recently looking at them about 4 months ago for a friend.
The GOOD, you can drop lots of motors into them the best being either the 1.8L GSR motor or 2.0L EVO motor, high 12's with slicks is very acheivable 13's high on street tyres you cna't get grip due to the low weight of the car.
The last have the least factroy paower motor but get better brakes from the Magna. but from factory come with pretty weak brakes, even by todays standard.
I remember thme and ET's Cordia and ET's were the rage in the high K's in cost with performance to boot. As some has pointed out were putting WRx's to shame. But like Et's they are getting long in the tooth
The BAD getting a good motor even stock is hard to find. Lots of fake GSL made up ot GSR Turbo spec. Rust quite bad in some areas and but carry stronger panels compared with other cars of the time like ET's leaning on them car still do damge but not like on an ET. MTX'S are mostly gone if any that have been keep rebuilt are in good cars with bigger motors. Drive sharfts are not the strongest. Most people who add the latter motorst adapt the latter FWD 1.8L lancer gearbox.
The Best way to run a CORDIA is if the motor is good 13psi intercooler approx anything around a RX-7 Series 4/5 or even toyota soarer/ supra but try and get metal end tanked ones most are plastic. Then the usual exhuast, intake . After that you need a ECU i nthe like of a fuel, timing control only wil do fine with these motors as that's all they need menaing approx $300 second hand only needs to be spent on the device. EMs comes to mind.
One thing to note is that the motor even tohugh strong, once they go over 200,000k's ( including rebuilt) Don't ask me why but most need new rings Goes the same with Magnas of the time they jsut start to burn oil. But from what I have read and understand is the standard rings just give in, but alot of rebuilt one's have aftermakrt rings that will last the distance.
If oyur lucky you find one like me and my mate did cost him $5000 but it had a 1.8L turob 94 GSR motor with evo 3 intercooler, EMS ECU, and a LANCER FWD GEARBOX with custom drive shafts. Along with late model Magna brake upgrade which makes it brake real well Yes to get the rest of the car where it would be nice it has cost him another $3000 but that's including redoing the interior for approX $1500 includign stereo the rest on body panels and respray. He is a panel beater but and this is his daily driver for now.

glad you brought up the bit about rust rod, another thing to note is that 2nd hard parts for these cars are hard to come by, anything like light covers and plastic insert's will cost you more than most would expect so keep that in mind when you go shopping, if there are too many panels damaged that you repair on fixing then it will add up |
