What do i look for in a old mx6 turbo when buying... The mx6 im looking at at the moment has done 220 000 kms... I know its a bit old but not bad for 4k. What do i look for when test driving the car like faults and stuff... This is gona be my first turbo car so i dont know wat to look for as in check the turbo, right amount of boost, leaks, piping and stuff.... If i buy the car would a major service be needed right away if the engine hasnt been rebuilt? And how much would it cost to rebuilt the engine if i asked a mechanic to do it for meh? Any help would be appreciated. thanks.... |

hey mx6rida,
At 220 000k's you will probably need to do a few things, definately a full service including plugs, fuel filter and probably ignition leads... check your engine mounts, they will probably need replacing and will cost you around $500 - 600, also probably a good idea to run an ecu diag test to make sure no error codes are stored on the system...
the turbos are pretty robust from my experience, mine had 160 000k's on it when i upgraded and there is still virtually no shaft play at all... just make sure the turbo is too loud when you thrash it and that there is no white smoke coming out of the exhaust after its been warmed up a bit... another thing worth checking will be the coolant levels, look for signs of previous leaks as well as the codition of the hoses. Also with the engine on unscrew the oil filler cap and look for small signs of white smoke..
your best bet though would be to get a company to check out your ride for you, be present while he goes over the car.. I used these guys called sydney vehicle check (SVC) and they were brilliant, the amount of shit they found in the first two cars that i got inspected were amazing, these guys saved me alot of money.... back then though these things were going for 9k and since the service is around $150 it was definately money well spent... certainly worth considering in any event...
rebuilding the engine varies depending on what needs to be replaced, i've never needed it done myself but i would imagine your looking at $2000 - $3000...
if the car has been well taken care of though then you might not need the rebuild at all, there are plenty of examples in the 300 000k's completely stock and still going strong... these mazda engines are pretty good if they are treated right.. its just a matter of determining how the previous owners have treated it i suppose
hth

thanks dood.. Thats alot of help... and also wanted to ask if there is white smoke coming out of the exhaust or when the car is warmed up i shouldnt touch it ay... as in not buy it. It would also be better if i didnt buy a car with mods as there is more of a chance that it would be thrashed... anyway im gona try to look for a 6 turbo which has been rebuilt recently so i dont have to spend 2-3k...rather spend it on mods also do i need to check anything with the intercooler, piping? but i imagine that would be pretty hard as its hidden. Or is there a way of getting to see it without any major hassles?
thx...mx68u. |

i would stay away from rebuilded engines... esp if its fresh... if someones selling a freshly rebuilt engine i doubt he paid heaps for it... further more most rebuilds i've seen have been very shonky... imho your better off with a bone stock mx6/tx5 in good condition... remember 250 000 easy km's is alwayz heaps better than 150 000 hard km's
if its warmed up and still smoking then probably the seal on the turbo is gone... or maybe even the rings on the pistons... evidently its burning oil some how...
good luck |
