Well as a few of you know i got the turbocharger on my mx6 upgraded to a vf22 bb turbo that came off the early STi's in order to obtain my target horsepower figure of 300hp (fly). Anywayz all the way back in late january i approached the guys that do pretty much all the repairs on my car, commented that i was thinking of upgrading the turbo to which they replied yeah we could do that for you, seeing quite a few old shitbox's running late model jap engines i thought yeah these guys look like they know what there doing, besides they said they could do a custom manifold for around $500 which seemed like a good price at the time...

so i booked my car in... gave them a call in 3 days as they suggested and of course there is some sort of delay, "flange wont be in for a week", a little pissed i asked how long till the job is finished, i need the car etc etc and they assured me it'll be done as soon as the flange comes in.... week and a half later after a few calls the flange finally came in and they started work on the manifold... 3 weeks after i brought in my car i finally get it back, needless to say i was exstatic that the car was finally ready and eagar to try out the vf22. After handing over 1100 bucks for this very 2nd rate manifold (amatuer welding), some aluminum intercooler piping and a fitted turbo i tow the car to the local exhaust shop to get the dump pipe made up and fit a flex joint and cat... great car can finally be started and i can test out what the vf22 is like...

start the 6 up and i hear a that very familiar exhaust leak making my car sound like absolute shitbox, the manifold was leaking quite a bit from the left side of the head/manifold flange.. shitted me since this exact problem initially prompted the upgrade the turbo i drove back to my mechanic to get the thing fixed. they ended up pulling the manifold off and apparently the flange was uneven so they grinded it down and bolted the thing back up to the engine...

finally no leak, great stuff, time to try that vf22 eh? start the car and it idles like absolute shit... stalling after a few seconds.. im like wtf? mechanic scatches his head like fuken usual, leave it with me it'll be ready by this arvo... a few hours later i see the two clowns still looking over my car, peek my head around to the engine bay and see my air flow meter pulled apart, im like wtf, whats going on... "it looks like the air flow meter might be stuffed", so ok fair enough the guys playing around with the delicate spring and mechanics with a screw driver but to no avail. So after that avenue was exhausted (and probably a worse off afm aswell) they return to looking for leaks for the next 30mins, so i decided to just hobble the car back home in its current state to have an in depth look at the intake system and where it could be leaking... next day i pull off the bumper which reveals a large split where the end tank meets the core at the top of the cooler, take the cooler to the mechanic and get the thing welded up bring it back, hook it up, clean the engine bay quickly and suddenly my first squirt around the block with the vf22 was imminent....

i get in the car... take it easy for the first 10 minutes barely creating any boost just making sure everything is going ok i finally give it a hit... and wham.. 1 pound of boost @ 3k, 4 pounds by 4k and then 10 pounds by 5k.. blink.gif just fuking great the wastegate must be sticking open..... so again i take the car back and after a day of adjustments to the actuator rod (read: bending) to prevent it from getting obstructed by the turbo housing (turbo had to be completely shifted around to suit the mx6 setup) they informed me that "yep, your cars ready". I hop in and give the thing a few hits, definately heaps more power up top with a lil less down low at just 10pounds i was pretty happy... the only problem i noticed was that after a few days the boost would fluctuate from 10 to 13 or so psi... since my car was running lean with the old turbo @ 14psi this was of course not suitable so of course like i've done so many times in the past i take the car back again... Same problem as before, wastegate rod is being obstructed delaying the opening of the wastegate so after another day of adjustments i get 10 pounds and it does seem a little more stable but on occasions still over boosts... fuken shit cunts...

a couple of weeks later i start my car to hear once again the exhaust manifold leaking from the exact same spot as before... i try to tighten the nut but no go, the thing doesnt take it up... after i unscrew the thing it look like the helicoil they put in to hold the bolt came loose making it impossible to tighten... so i take the thing over again they remove the helicoil and try another bolt, start the car and all is good.. i get home and notice the familiar noise but there's no leak on the head/manifold area so i feel around the turbine intake which reveals another much larger leak.. great stuff.. i take the car in yet again to get it sorted just last friday.. they pull off the manifold, place in a new gasket, change the bolts and tighten the thing up again... come to pick up the car after getting the usual "yep.... your cars ready", start the thing and yeap the leak is fixed at the front of the connection but still theres another at the back... FUKEN HELL!!! being the late hours of friday i said ill bring it back monday morning, placing them on notice that if the thing isnt fixed then ill have to bring a 3rd party into this shocking job...

take the car for a great cruise this saturday out south sydney in picton, great tourist drive and long fast bends... wastegate is still sticking... sometimes 5 pounds by 5k and other times 15pounds by 3.2k (after more bending) and thats where im now.. car feel absolutely fantastic to drive but when its cold the manifold even after 4 months is still leaking and the boost is still fluctuating which is all quite unacceptable... esp after i've forked out in excess of 1100 bucks for this conversion...

i really hope no one ever finds themselves in a situation like this... this ongoing issues has made something that i enjoy so much a complete let down... for the first time i look at the 6 with resentment.. i cant stay mad at it for too long but still the thought of selling the 6 or returning it to normal form has came across my mind... its incredibly depressing sad.gif

sorry for the long post.. rip.gif

I think they could make a movie out of that post. Don't worry (as impossible as it is) once you get it all done it will be way worth it. It's just all the bull shit that it takes to get there. Just look at it this way, you can at least drive your car right now. There are some of us here that are walking.

Yes it's a turbocharged FE3, (soon on the bottle) and NO you can't drive it

Now you know how drive-by shootings got started.....
I am amazed you haven't gotten a lawyer involved in this by now. I am also amazed that you have put up with it for so long.

i know... i know...

although i did have a look under the car yesterday and believe it or not the exhaust pipe is actually welded onto the undercarrige BEFORE the flex joint, since our engines flex so much i think that this constant leaking is a result of the poorly designed exhaust, before i take it back yet again ill get that sorted and see how she goes...

on another note i find lawyers to be more trouble than they are worth.. but the way they have dealt with this whole situation is just shithouse...

anywayz.. atm i have bigger issues.. the mx6 has been in an accident so nothing will be touched until that gets sorted, if it ever does sad.gif

did see a saab 1991 2000cd yesterday at a dealership for $9, 999... so if things dont turn out ill probably be looking into the saabs as a next car, man those 2.3litre turbos kick ass, like 14.9's stock, only problem is its FWD like the 6...

anywayz, i love the 6, and im far from giving up on it.. just hope everything sorts itself out... jesus i just got teh valve cover coated this nice greyish colour and was just about finished with my performance modz, another 1500 to send and thats it... sigh...
