Introduction

I have alot of people ask me basic questions about turbo charging the kl-03 (stock v6 motor). Through this little tutorial/result of boredem, I'll just give you a basic run down of the venture of T/C (turbo charging) your mx6.

The Basics
-First off, T/C the kl-03 is easier said then done, simply because of the restrictive space under the hood. The probe's have more room, so they are much more commonly boosted.

-I'm not going to lie, if you go the FI(forced induction) route, you won't get as much power as turbo's are rumored to be able to give. An averagly tuned kl03 turbo charged only has around 220hp-250hp. However, some of the 03s are rumored to have much more.

-The maximum safe boosting pressure without having to install a potentially ellaborate intercooler is 7psi. If you want to go higher, your bill will be higher$$. Boosting higher then 7psi can be done with the right parts: JE Fordged pistons and rods, Warblo 255 fuel pump, a stage 3 clutch, a decent (non elcheepo) BOV, a boost controller, and a decently sized front-mount intercooler. These are the bare minmum you should have if you want to boost over 7 pounds.

-The bare minimum for boosting at all should entail the Warblo fuel pump I mentioned, along with the stage 3 clutch, a boost controller, and a BOV.

-Another issue to consider is the age of the engine. If your car has 120k miles-dont turbo charge it. rebuild it first, then consider stuffing air down it's throat.

Turbo Charging

When selecting a turbo, check the walls of the turbo for any hairline cracks, this can indicate a rough life, and that wont be the turbo you want.

Check the blades for any cracks, and spin it to check for any play. Don't be suprised if you feel some play while you spin it, this is common, use your common sense to judge whether the play is too significant to consider that turbo.

The size that people use on the mx6 vary widely, recently sombody put a 14G mitsubishi turbo(very small relative to 2.5L). A good size is a t3 or a t3/04(although very expensive). Some people go to junk yards for turbos; I don't recommend it, so look around for shops that sell "re-manufactured" turbos. These are basicly older turbos that have been repaired, and have had parts replaced.

Conclusion

Well I hope you have gained insight through my product of extra time before a class. This is for newbies, I don't recommend you try to turbocharge your new mx6 but your probibly going to do it anyway so this article is here for you.

Turbocharging is not as simple as I have explained. It is alot of hard work, there are countless minute details involved; these are just the basic procedures.

Interesting post about Turbo charging but one little thing
You don't always need a BOV. Blow off valves /by pass valves are mostly used for show, in fact many people who turbo charge cars don't even use them. Yes it does do things that are not desired for the turbo but it has never been proven to be an advanatage, you don't make more power, and a good driver can stop turbine bakc spin becuase the throttle is controlled on gear change. I know of two car being turbo charged only one is using a BOV. Infact today only on 6psi it might have that classic turbo shutter of the turbine spinning backwards but it does not stop it from working. Early Race turbo cars o the 80's when turbocharging became the norm never used BOV's.
But of interest is How things are done differently in North America/ Canada compared to Australia and NZ.
You will find the most Aus kits for sale have alot more work done to them. The AVO kit for the Type R compared with one from a Westcoast company showed how much different they were AVO's ran a good 12.8:1 F/A ratio underboost but the other one Ran a rich 11.1:1 . This is from Croydon Autosports results.
When ever Turboing a car it's best done to your living and driving type.
One Advantage australia has is the Number of Nissan Mazda Subaru Toyota and Mistubishi cars Sodl in Australia with turbos which have spawed alot of aftermarket and Import wreakers to bring in gear from Japan. Prices do vary from Japan but we do have the advantage of seeing more of these factory components used on factory cars imported to our country.

Pecknhard I have seen 2 old GTI's like your Turbo charged went well, One had a complete motor transplant the other a custom job. Was written off but.

Personally if you can $2500 for a GT2835 for turbo charging a KL-03, gives you great range for 7psi or 18psi. Great Turbo
