not sure were you can get carbon fibre but you might be able to make something out of fibreglass.. it would be cheap and i imagine easier.. but i've never really worked with it so i cant say for certain...
A while back i was looking at building my own airbox as well.. i have a twin entry pod style filter that really needs a decent amount of airflow... as a practice run i bought a cheapie window (dash) protector from a bargin shop for like $5 and cut out a circular design making a cylinder the size of the base of the cone style air filter, a very tight fit... then to enclose the other end i just cut out a circle from the off cuts and stapled it to the top of the cylinder to create an enclosed area, cut a 3inch diameter hole at the top and fed in my cai piping... it was a really neat setup that looked great will a aliminium foil look.. it was getting plenty of cold air thanks to the 3inch flexible hosing that was mounted in the front of the car...
i then went out for some gtech runs on a local road to see the performance... it was a little confusing.. the car felt a little strong down lower but in higher gears and at the top of the rev range it seemed a lil less powerful... anywayz after a couple of gtech runs i pulled the cover out and done a couple more and found that i actually gained 2 tenths of a second down the quarter with the cover off!... Now it might be a different story in a NA car.. but with my mx6 turbo running 14psi it looks like the 3in piping cant provide enough air for the higher gears up in the rev range... so ofcourse i just scraped the idea and left it suckin in the hot air under the bonnet...
to reduce under bonnet temps im going to get the header's, turbine and dump pipe ceramic coated which will make a huge difference.. so in turn i should get a slight performance gain as well since i have the open cone filter setup
