1tina: we wanna soup the XR6 up, any ideas or sites that I could go to to have a bit of a look?
SikXC: Try www.fordmods.tk Tina
1tina: thanks Mick, there seems to be heaps on that site, it could come in handy in the future for me as well if sumthin eva goes wrong.
SikXC: No probs. I thought it was quite handy myself, plus they do have a link to our website up there.
EvilChief: Ok here is a final list:
a) CAI (Cold Air Intake): there are several options available ranging from custom intakes to simple in the box modifications. You can either use a POD filter, which has become quite popular, or just use the original airbox and throw an aftermarket air filter such as a K&N filter into it. Just ensure u have a at least 3" cold air feed to either POD or air box. do a bit of research on the net and you will find heaps of options. APPROX. COST: $100 - $300 (depending on the complexity of the system)
Exhaust System: Commonly people start with a cat back exhaust, which surly free flows after the cat but i still have initial restrictions of headers and cat. Aftermarket HiPo Extractors as well as cat are also available. Common brands such as Pacemakers (extractors) and Lukey (exhaust) are widely used on the falcon these days. APPROX. COST: Extractors: ~$320+ HiPo Cat: ~$250+ Cat Back: ~$250 (You can surely set up the system in stages starting with cat back, then going extractors and then cat)
c) Cam & Head: One of the major and probably most expensive options, but also most effective ones too is to replace the cam. While you are at it, it is adviseable to port your head as well. Crow Cams are quite popular for Falcons. They come in 3 Stages with different power curves. However Stage 1 & 2 dont necessarly even require remving the head, they are simple plug and play parts. Stage 3 cam is where you get serious. You can run the S3 cam without porting, but wont be very effective. APPROX. COST: Cam (S1 - S3): $375 Porting: ~$300 Gaskets: $160 (ACL if required) Labour for cam replacement: ~$600 Labour for Head reabuild: ~$2000+ (Labour cost is just an approximation and depends if you have old mates in teh business who can help you out or not)
d) ECU upgrades: I have done a little research on this. It is always good to reprogram your ECU to the mods, but a standard ECU can only go that far. for option a and b you will not require to do anything to your ECU, but if you for option c, your ECU 'might' play up on you (I am still testing this). However for further ECU upgrades other than reprogramming it you got the option of a custom chip (such as ChipTorque, PowerChip, etc) or a piggy back aftermarket ECU, which will comepletly take over the fuel/air and ignition timing. (there are also data benders, which intercept data from sensors and alter the signals to the ecu for the ecu to handle the new options, but in my opinion it is and unrealiable system). Piggy back ECU tend to be very costy (Eg: Link, Microtech, Wolf3D, etc). APPROX. COST: Chip: $600 - $1100 ECU: $1100 - $2500 Labour (for ECU installation): from $500
e) Stroker kit: After you have done the top end you can also focus on the bottom end with a stroker kit. These engines are not easy to bore so you might be better off with just leaving it as is. Increasing the comp ratio needs to be considered especially if you wanna boost the car at a later stage. Stroking will most likely be a MUST when boosting. APPROX. COST: from $1200
f) Driveline: With increasing power you might wanna consider upgrades of Transmission and Diff. If manual have a good look at clutch a gear parts, if automatic consider shifting kits and stall converters. the standard diff should handle a fair amount of NA power, but when boosted you should definately look at and upgrade.
g) Turbo / SuperCharger: Now we are getting serious. There are several Turbo and SC kits available, especially CAPA has put some research into it (see Links page). There are also quite a few people in the brisbane area who developed custom Turbo kits. Old mate up here developed a T03 Turbo kit, which runs on Stock internals 220kW at wheels and costs around $7000. For any sort of boosting you will be looking at that sort of price range.

Overall, the Falcon 6cyl 4l engine is quite capable of producing high Performance figures. I am aware of quite a few 10 and 9 sec 4l Falcons and run 350+kWs. Have fun!
-------------------- WHOHOO ... got my opens today ... as much as it would matter to me anyway ... and 96 in the ash tray! |
