Hi fellas, well I've got a cat-back system for my tx5, and I was looking underneath the car when I noticed an S bend piece ( which contains the Oxygen sensors ) in the exhaust piping before the cat. It looks pretty damn restrictive to me & I've been thinking about a straight through piece of piping for it. I have a query about the 0xygen sensors though. If I put one in its place will the oxygen sensor have trouble with the the increased ammount of air flow & can the computer handle it also without running the car rich. Also I've read in a previous forum that somebody had a mod chip for their tx5, can anybody give me some information about where I may be able to get one from & what improvement in performance they've noticed.

as far as the s bend is concerned i dont see any issue with the o2 sensors reading the exhaust gas but seriously it'll probably be a good idea to ask a couple of exhaust shops... i dont see how more turbulance could effect a reading from an o2 sensor..
as far as the chips are concerned i wouldnt bother until you get a few modz... you might squeeze out a coouple of kilowatts but thats about it.. Also if you go for a chip make sure you go with one that is actually tunable in real-time.. not that off the shelf crap that is designed for an engine in different condition with specific modz and in specific environments.. if your engine doesnt match the initial donor then really its not going to be very well tuned is it..
chiptorque will add a chip and then throw your car on a dyno and tune it to your cars condition and modz, only then can you see any gains from aftermarket management.. another option definately worth looking at is a UNICHIP, inteceptor devices that manipulates (amplifies, resists) voltages coming in/out of the ECU to control injector pulse, timing, etc etc...
but really as i said there is no point until your car is actually out of tune and the factory ECU can compensate thru o2 sensors and what not... if you got for some tougher cams, extractors and straight-thru pipe, hi flow cat, advanced timing, CAI etc etc then definately a proper tune with one of the options above will really maximise your gains ensuring your car is running properly throughout the rev range and be more economical/powerful in the process... the more modz.. the less tuned, the larger the benefits of aftermarket management
hope this helps

| ok thanks bud. I've just heard that some o2 sensors are specifcally designed to the ammount of flow they will experience on a certain exhaust set up. On closer inspection it also appeared that the piping went abit smaller on the S bend & had some sort of heat sheilding around it. This weekend I'm gonna go seean exhaust guy n get a quote on it mod. When I first bought the car I didn't intend on doing anything to it, but b'cos its such a comfortable car to drive, n it looks really cool since I lowered it n put tall rims on it, I cant stop wondering what I can get out of it. |

I remember caleb on this site was saying he had that replaced and he actually lost power from the change, he ended up putting the stock piping back on from the cat forward

| That doesn't sound very good. Any ideas why he lost power? Also my hydrolic lifters tap abit. Cold start is usually worse but it will still tap lightly when it's warm. I'm using castrol magnatec cos its supposed to leave a coat on the moving parts, but its still the same. A mechanic told me that I may need some thicker oil so I hangs around more. I'm not to sure though cos I was gonna go 4 a thinner oil to help it get to the engine quicker. Any ideas on this? |
